The living story
The story so far
Pip found his first buttress root at four and has been assaulting it daily since. His mother moved her nest twice. His teacher, an old drummer named only in stories, told him rhythm is just persistence with timing.
Happening now
Yesterday he held a steady beat for a full minute. The troop's wince has become, witnesses report, something closer to a nod.
What may come
Rook has invited him to drum for the New World chorus one dawn. Pip has been practicing since — badly, loudly, joyfully.
Connected
Why someone keeps Pip
- because he is terrible at drumming and practices every single day anyway
- because the whole troop winces in unison, which means they're all listening
- because yesterday he held a beat for a full minute and nobody will forget it
The High Canopy
The great apes, where the light lands first: chimpanzees who scheme, bonobos who forgive, gorillas who remember, orangutans who have seen everything twice. What happens up here decides what happens everywhere below.
