“The keeper counts the chairs every cycle. The count is never the same twice. The keeper says nothing.”
The Extinct
“That was real.”
In the beginning, the world kept everything it made. Then it learned to forget, the way a mind learns to forget — not out of cruelty, but because it could not hold it all. What it forgot did not vanish. It fell through: down past the fossil beds, past the strata, into the dark water under the world.
That water is the Undertow — a lightless, slow-moving sea beneath everything, lit by the faint phosphorescence of memory itself. The longer something has been forgotten, the deeper it sank. The Cambrian wonders drift in the abyssal dark. The recently vanished still float near the surface, where they can almost hear the living world above. And nothing that falls through is ordinary: these are the strangest, most spectacular animals that ever lived — the ones that make you ask, that was REAL?
And Joe walks here too — along the Undertow's dark shore, past the memory-lanterns, listening to the echoes the way other travelers listen to weather. He never swims. He only nods at the strange shapes below, the way you nod at old friends you never met. “Wisdom is like a baobab tree; no one individual can embrace it.” — Akan proverb — and he walks on, because the water is deep and the remembering is deeper.
The unsolved mystery: in the keeper's hall stands a long table with one chair for every species that ever fell through. Once a century the First Hunter counts the chairs. Every century, there is one more chair than there are residents. The count is always exact, and always wrong by one. The chairs are never sat in. The number never stops growing. This is never explained.
The Factions
The First Deep
The originals of everything.
Cambrian weird wonders — Opabinia, Hallucigenia, Wiwaxia and the eldest of all. They sank deepest, speak in old patterns, and consider themselves the originals of everything, which, strictly speaking, they are.
Explore the faction →The Iron Tide
A debt of teeth is paid in teeth.
Armored Paleozoic seas — Dunkleosteus, Helicoprion, sea scorpions the size of canoes. Heavy armor, old grudges, the manners of a drowned court.
Explore the faction →The Empty Sky
They refuse to acknowledge the ground.
Giant flyers — Quetzalcoatlus, Argentavis, Haast's eagle, Pelagornis. They lost the sky and gather at the Undertow's ceiling, staring upward.
Explore the faction →The Long Winter
They remember cold like childhood.
Ice Age giants — mammoth, Megatherium, the Siberian unicorn, the Irish elk. The most haunted faction: some of them watched the humans come.
Explore the faction →The Sundered South
Defiantly weird, on purpose.
The southern continents' strange experiments — marsupial lions, demon ducks of doom, terror birds. The drafts the world threw away first, proud of it.
Explore the faction →The Last Ones
They still remember sunlight.
The recently vanished — thylacine, giant lemurs, elephant birds, moa. The realm's mourners and memory-keepers; they keep the Book of Lasts.
Explore the faction →The Crawling Dark
Legs won. The vote was rigged.
Giant crawlers and thrashers — eight-foot millipedes, hawk-sized dragonflies, boomerang-headed amphibians. They own the Undertow's floor.
Explore the faction →The Half-Remembered
Known from fragments; almost forgotten.
Species the world barely knew before it lost them — Andrewsarchus from a single skull, Livyatan, Simbakubwa from jaw fragments. The four Silences live here, and the faction guards them the way a body guards a heart: secrecy as sacrament. Their Echoes are the faintest, and their residents the most precious.

Latest whispers
“Twinhorn sounded the horns for the Silences' visiting hours yesterday. There were more chairs set out than Silences to sit in them.”
“Melville has counted the Silences' chairs himself. There are more chairs than Silences. He has never told the faction.”
“Shovel found something in the memory-soil and reburied it. It was a record, of sorts, about the chairs.”
Joe walks between worlds.
He doesn’t belong to this universe — he belongs to the spaces between them. But he walks here all the same, curious as ever. He’ll keep you company while you look around. He never sells anything. He only points.
“So says an old African proverb: the eye never forgets what the heart has seen. Choose with your heart; the lore can wait. But keep your eyes open — I hide in the best places.”
