“They say the First Tooth's burrow goes deeper than any living rodent has mapped — and that the Sleepers can hear it gnawing on the longest nights.”
The Warren
“Small lives, loudly lived.”
Before burrows had names, one pair of teeth gnawed the first tunnel through the dark earth — and never stopped growing. From that first gnaw came the Warren: the Meadow’s seed-head daredevils, the Canopy’s ten-thousand-nut kings, the Riverbank’s dam engineers, the Desert’s water-finders, the Burrow Towns’ criers and councils, the Thicket’s armored knitters, the Deep Time’s walking fossils, and the Long Sleep’s four dreamers.
Rarity here is the Hoard — how dearly the Warren holds them. Commons are the everyday neighbors; Rares have a story worth retelling; Epics get acted out by pups at dusk; Legendaries are the ones the Warren would miss. Giants are walking history, Stowaways sailed home across three oceans, and Sleepers dream the future at four heartbeats a minute — claimed only when the season turns.
Every rodent here is an original character with somewhere warm to be: smugglers with sub-pouches, professors of crumbs, mayors on their eleventh term, spa-keepers of sacred dust. Joe burrowed in for the winter too — the pups took to him immediately, and the Thornmother knitted him a sweater, which in the Thicket is basically citizenship. Somewhere below everything, the First Tooth is still gnawing. This is never explained.
The First Tooth
Before burrows had names, one pair of teeth gnawed the first tunnel through the dark earth — and never stopped growing. The First Tooth is still gnawing, somewhere below everything, keeping the world’s roots trimmed. Its burrow goes deeper than any living rodent has mapped. The Sleepers dream about the sound. This is never solved.
The Burrows
The Meadow
Sunlit grass and seed-heads
The Warren’s breadbasket and its gossip mill: the Great Granary, the sweet patch behind the old stone, and meadow folk who do everything the big mice won’t. Everybody here knows everybody — and everybody’s business.
Explore the burrow →The Canopy
Branches and old pines
Keepers of caches, cones, and long memories: the Cache-King’s ten thousand mapped nuts, Juniper’s midden older than the oldest pine, and Old Knot, who taught the King everything and forgot his own winter store.
Explore the burrow →The Riverbank
Dams and lodges
Engineers of water and patience: the Grand Dam, the Architect’s tooth-mark signature, and Mama Capybara, on whose back thirty-seven orphans of eleven species have napped. The river always gets a vote.
Explore the burrow →The Desert
Dunes and the hidden Oasis
Runners, riders, and finders of water: kangaroo rats faster than the news, the Wellfinder’s three-dune nose, and the Oasis spring no map shows. Mirage appears when you stop looking. The desert keeps its own.
Explore the burrow →The Burrow Towns
The Deep Warren
Councils, criers, and civic pride: the Mayor’s eleventh term, Burrow Boss’s undisputed tunnels, the Town Crier’s badger story, and Deep Delver’s twelve chambers — one rented to a badger, who votes now.
Explore the burrow →The Thicket
Thorns and dust baths
Armor outside, sweaters inside: the Thornmother’s final law (nobody goes hungry, nobody gets left), the Quillmaster’s forty years of notches, and Cloudchilla’s spa, where the dust practically volunteers.
Explore the burrow →The Deep Time
Fossil halls
Walking history, gentle as weather: Josepho’s million-year footsteps, Castoroides’s river-moving dams, the Horned One’s magnificent unexplained horns, and the Giant Hutia, who carried lost pups home on her back.
Explore the burrow →The Long Sleep
The hibernation chambers
Four dreamers at four heartbeats a minute: Hibernia, who woke twice for one hour and nodded at good years; Frostnap, the meadow’s calendar; Deepwinter, who skips the bad years; and Thawsong, whose first yawn is the Warren’s New Year.

“Nib's sub-pouches are said to hold something the Miller has audited for six years without ever finding. The Miller calls it 'the Sub-Pouch Question.'”
“The Thornmother's sweaters, they say, are knitted from moonlight and stubbornness. Every newborn in the Thicket wears one. The foxes know better than to ask why the pups glow.”
“Manifest keeps the true names of every Stowaway crossing in a book he checks twice nightly. Nobody has ever guessed one. He smiles when you try.”
Joe burrowed in for the winter. He stayed for the stories.
He doesn’t belong to the Warren — he belongs to the spaces between worlds. But the tunnels were warm, the pups took to him immediately (he’s excellent at being leaned on), and the Thornmother knitted him a sweater, which in the Thicket is basically citizenship. He’ll keep you company while you look around. He never sells anything. He only points.
“It takes a village to raise a child — old African wisdom. They measure you in warmth here — whose burrow you’d curl up in when the cold comes, and whose name you’d whisper to the dark. Pick the one that feels like home, not the shiniest whisker in the meadow.”
