Before the first reptile, there was the first shed — a skin cast off three hundred million years ago that never decayed, dreaming in the deep earth. Out of that dream came every pattern every reptile would ever wear. The world that grew on top of it is the Shed World: warm basalt at dawn, amber mist drifting, and somewhere to be warm for every cold-blooded heart.
Rarity here is the Shed — how many skins you have outgrown. The First Shed are many and bright (Common); the Many-Shed are learning (Rare); the Hundred-Shed are seasoned (Epic); and the Ageless, who stopped counting, are legends (Legendary) — only three of each will ever exist. Four elders shed once more than anyone thought possible and came back twice-born. Four the earth kept in its fossil beds. Four older than the registry itself, never seen shedding.
Every reptile here is somebody’s whole world, with somewhere warm to be and something to wait for: the patient, the baskers, the ancient. Joe walks the Shed World too — the Coils went still when he passed, which the old ones say is respect, and the River Tyrants watched him from the water with their ancient eyes and did not move, which has never happened before. Somewhere in the deep earth, the Unshed dreams on. This is never explained.
The unsolved mysteryThe Unshed
Three hundred million years ago, something cast off a skin that never decayed. It dreams in the deep earth still, and every pattern every reptile would ever wear came out of that dream. No one has seen it. The Primeval, older than the registry itself, go quiet when it is mentioned. Whether it dreams the reptiles, or the reptiles dream it, is never said. This is never solved.
