Vesper

“The forest exhales when Vesper starts.”

A Night ape of The Singers

The living story

The story so far

Vesper's dusk song — the mirror of Aria's dawn — closes the forest's day. She took the evening slot as a juvenile and never gave it up: 'Someone has to end things beautifully.'

Happening now

The forest exhales when she starts — shoulders drop, the day's arguments dissolve, Hush's lullaby takes over where Vesper leaves off. The handoff is seamless. It has been rehearsed for years.

What may come

She and Aria have never sung together — dawn and dusk, the bookends, never meeting. The forest wonders what it would sound like. So do they.

Why someone keeps Vesper

  • because she's the only Singer who sings at dusk — 'someone has to end things beautifully'
  • because the forest exhales when she starts
  • because she and Aria have never sung together, and everyone wonders

The Singers

The gibbons and siamangs: the brachiators, the ones who fly without leaving the trees. Every dawn they sing the forest awake in duets — mated pairs, perfectly in sync, louder than anything with a right to be.
