The story so far
Ksitigarbha, the Bodhisattva who vowed: not until the hells are empty will I become a Buddha. So he waits — monk's staff in hand, jewel in the other — at the gates of the underworld, talking souls through their sentences one by one. The hells are nowhere near empty. He has never once checked the time.
