The story so far
The One-Legged Thunder Beast of Mount Liubo: ox-bodied, single-legged, its voice like thunder rolling off the mountain. The Yellow Emperor had its hide stretched over war drums you could hear for five hundred li. It still resents the drum. The drum does not care.
Happening now
It is standing on its one leg on Mount Liubo right now, bellowing at the clouds, while somewhere far below a drummer practices on a drum made from somebody else.
What may come
One day the last war drum will fall silent — no more battles, no more five-hundred-li thunder — and the Kui will bellow once, for joy, and the sound will roll off the mountain with nothing to answer it but the echo. It will be the best sound it ever made.
