The story so far
Elasmotherium sibiricum: the 'Siberian unicorn,' a rhinoceros with a single enormous horn on its forehead, extinct 39,000 years ago — late enough that humans may have seen it, and told stories, and the stories became the unicorn. Unicorn knows he is the truth behind the myth, and he wears it with a grace that infuriates the merely famous. In the Undertow he is the Long Winter's living legend: the young ones touch his horn for luck (he allows it, graciously), the old ones nod to him, and he has never once corrected anyone's unicorn stories. 'The myth,' he says, 'was the kindest thing the humans ever did for me.'
