The living story

The story so far

She was a fencer, and she sees the next three seconds coming. Forethought's split-second foresight makes her untouchable in a fight — she has disarmed twelve gunmen without hurrying. She plays chess badly. Knowing the next move ruins it, she says.

Happening now

The harbor drill is running the evacuation timing, and Forethought is walking the route three seconds ahead of everyone — calling the stumbles before they happen, the bottlenecks before they form. The drill is running perfectly. She looks a little bored. She is never bored. She is three seconds past bored.

What may come

She's been teaching the junior Mindfire to fight without hurrying — to see the moment and meet it calmly. Her star pupil is a former crossing guard with no powers at all, just timing. Forethought says that's the whole lesson. The pupil is starting to believe her.

The Mindfire

Vesper's psions — telepaths, telekinetics, and dreamwalkers who answer calls the body can't reach. They find the lost by thinking of them, lift the fallen without touching, and keep the city's nightmares quiet. The Mindfire's rule: never take what a mind doesn't offer.
