It settled on this rock before the vent beside it existed — before the chimney, before the Compact, before the current coastline of the surface world. The Deepsea Anemone lives for centuries, barely moving, barely aging, watching the Abyss rearrange itself around its patience.
Happening now
It blooms its tentacled crown in the vent's warm edge, filtering what the current brings. The Brittle Stars carpet its feet; the Eelpouts come and go; the Anemone remains, as it always has.
What may come
Centuries are not forever. One day the Anemone will close its crown for the last time, and the Abyss will lose its oldest witness. Until then, it watches — and remembers everything the vents have ever done.
