Its eyes are tubes — literal telescopes — locked permanently on the water above. The Telescopefish has never looked down in its entire evolutionary history. Whatever happens beneath it is, as far as it is concerned, a rumor.

It hangs motionless in the Twilight, eyes aimed at the fading blue, waiting for a silhouette to cross. The migration fleet passes overhead like weather; the Telescopefish reads it the way you read clouds.
