The living story
The story so far
Thetis, courted by Zeus and Poseidon until prophecy warned her son would surpass his father, married the mortal Peleus instead. In the later songs she dipped Achilles in the Styx, hid him as a girl on Scyros, and mourned him before he died.
Happening now
She mourns still, in her father's sea caves. The Nereids sing laments; the waves keep time.
What may come
She ransomed Hector's body with Achilles, weeping, and the two enemies' mothers understood each other perfectly. Grief is the universal language.
