The living story

The story so far

He and Pluto orbit a point between them, face to face, forever — the system's only true binary pair of worlds. The court calls it service; Charon calls it marriage and corrects anyone who disagrees. He has never once looked at anyone else the way he looks at Pluto.

Happening now

The barycenter between them has been trembling, almost imperceptibly, as if the dark beyond is tugging. Charon has felt Pluto feel it too, and neither has spoken of it. He keeps his eyes on his partner; it is the only answer he has ever needed.

What may come

If the Primordial Suns converge, Charon will stand between them and Pluto — that is the entire plan. He is rehearsing the stance nightly. Whatever comes out of the dark will have to go through the half-planet first.
