The living story
The story so far
He was born in the wall’s oldest crack — the foundation crack, laid when the temple was new — and he has never lived anywhere else. "Why would I?" he says. "The rent is sunlight and the neighbors are history."
Happening now
He keeps the wall’s log: every tenant, every repair, every notable sunbeam, in tiny claw-script on shed bark. The log goes back eleven generations. Historians — the tortoise kind — consult it regularly.
What may come
He is currently restoring the east buttress, one pebble at a time. It will take him the rest of his life. "Good," he says. "I wasn’t using it for anything else."
