Hura

At noon, on the hottest day of the dry season, Hura detonates. The sandbox tree's seed pods ripen under pressure until they burst with a crack like gunfire, flinging seeds twenty meters through the understory — and every newcomer to the Canopy Throne learns the same lesson the same way: flat on the ground, heart hammering, while the old hands nap through it. "Artillery practice," the strangler figs call it, not looking up. Hura is unapologetic. Her trunk wears its own armor — bark studded with thick conical spines, a fortress against climbers — and her explosions are simply how she plants her children: ballistically. The court's etiquette manual, such as it is, contains one line about her: do not schedule audiences for noon. She has never once been on time for anything, and never once missed.
