Taxus

“Yew is a churchyard yew - 2,000 years of death and eternity - and solemnity is her parish duty.”

The living story

The story so far

Taxus bent the longbows of Agincourt and now keeps a churchyard. The yew's heartwood — orange-brown, springy, nearly immortal — was the weapon-wood of England, and they remember every bow: the draw weight, the archer's name, the field. Then the wars ended, or moved on, and the yews were left in the churchyards where they had always stood, poisonous and patient, older than the churches themselves. "I was a weapon," they say, "and now I am a witness. It is the better post." Their needles and seeds are deadly; their shade is where the village buries its dead. The Deep Root trusts them with the Missing Ring's ledgers — who better than a tree that has kept ten centuries of secrets? Asked what the ledgers say, Taxus only tends the graves. Some records, they believe, are kept by not being read.

Personality

The Taxus within

“Yew is a churchyard yew - 2,000 years of death and eternity - and solemnity is her parish duty.”

Churchyard, poisonous, ancient, solemn, and enduring - she treats your visit like a vigil and your haste like a young thing.

Loves
Quiet parishes, old stones, and people who stand.
Can't stand
Felling, being called morbid, and the storm.
How they befriend
Solemn - her friends get the vigil, always.
When you're having a bad day
She stands, she solemns, she endures - daring you to hurry.

A keeper’s whisper: She once fruited bright red for a churchyard wedding. Never told.

Whispers about Taxus

“Olea and Taxus passed over a ring at the solstice meeting. Not skipped: passed over. The silence lasted one full turn of the shadows. Then Olea poured the tea.”

“Taxus keeps one page of Antiaris's ledger that no one else may read. Once, Taxus read a single name aloud from it: a parish name, four hundred years gone. Then closed the book. The book closed itself the rest of the way.”
