“They say Old Ferment — crest gone silver, crop sweetened with age — the hoatzin the centuries made venerable. — and the high canopy hasn't contradicted them yet.”

Old Ferment
“In the Emergent Crown she presides over the ancient fermenting court, her crop sweetening with age, the canopy's memory in feathered form.”

The living story
The story so far
The hoatzin is the Amazon's strangest bird: chicks hatch with claws on their wings and climb like tiny reptiles; adults ferment leaves in an enormous crop, digesting like a cow and smelling — famously — like a barnyard, earning the name 'stinkbird.' Old Ferment is what Reekwing becomes when the centuries sweeten: the crest silvered, the ferment mellowed from barnyard to something like old wine, the wing-claw scars at her wrists a map of every branch she ever climbed. Her court is the Crown's old guard — noise versus Stumpghost's stillness, and Ferment's noise is the slow bubbling of deep time. The young hoatzins bring her their disputes; she settles them with a proverb, a belch of fermented wisdom, and absolute finality.
The Old Ferment within
“The hoatzin grown venerable — silver crest, indigo rings, the canopy's memory.”
Rufous and olive plumage gone silver at the crest, wing-claw scars at the wrists, a crop fermenting decades into wisdom — the Crown's least hurried judge, fragrant and final.
venerable, fragrant, unbothered, judicious, mellow, formidable
- Loves
- vintage years, the clawed young, dusk court
- Can't stand
- rushed verdicts, sourness, anyone mocking the scent
- How they befriend
- She'll settle your dispute and sweeten it; bring snacks.
- When you're having a bad day
- She'll let it ferment with you — and somehow the waiting helps.
How they’ll greet you: “Sit. The crop is warm and the century is young.”
A keeper’s whisper: One scar is from the first fall. She climbed back up.
Whispers about Old Ferment
Why someone keeps Old Ferment
- The hoatzin grown venerable — silver crest, indigo rings, the canopy's memory.
- One scar is from the first fall. She climbed back up.
- Through settling a dispute fresh instead of fermenting it — never by levels or years, only by choices, bonds, and what they cost.
The Emergent Crown
The canopy's top floor, where the strangest birds hold court above the clouds of insects. Reekwing's ancient fermenting court versus Stumpghost's silent watchers — noise against stillness, with King Vulture Coronach presiding over both in magnificent disdain.
