“They say Mudkeeper — burrows into mud, seals in a mucus cocoon, and breathes air for months until the rains return. — and the tea-dark water hasn't contradicted them yet.”

Mudkeeper
“In the Blackwater Veil they are the patient clay: waiting out anything, sealed in, breathing slow, utterly unbothered by the temporary.”
A Earth denizen of The Blackwater Veil
The living story
The story so far
The South American lungfish does not fight the dry season — it outlasts it, sealed in mucus, breathing air through months of mud. Mudkeeper has made this the Veil's deepest philosophy: everything passes except the waiting. They are the one the others consult when the cold war of etiquette frays — because someone who can wait out a season can wait out an argument. Barbelking naps near them; the big catfish says the mud-smell is comforting, and Mudkeeper pretends not to be pleased.
The Mudkeeper within
“Mudkeeper waits out everything — sealed in mud, breathing air, unbothered.”
Patient, earthy, and still as riverbank clay — the Veil's anchor, a lungfish who burrows into the mud and breathes air for months, waiting out every dry season the world invents.
patient, earthy, still, wise, unhurried, kind
- Loves
- the mud, the rains' return, slow breathing
- Can't stand
- hurry, wasted waiting, the dry that doesn't end
- How they befriend
- They'll wait beside you for as long as it takes — that's the whole friendship.
- When you're having a bad day
- They'll settle beside you in the mud, breathe slow and deep, and wait with you until the weather changes.
How they’ll greet you: “You're here. Sit. The mud is good.”
A keeper’s whisper: They once broke the cocoon early. The mud keeps the reason.
Whispers about Mudkeeper
Why someone keeps Mudkeeper
- Mudkeeper waits out everything — sealed in mud, breathing air, unbothered.
- They once broke the cocoon early. The mud keeps the reason.
- Through waiting out a crisis that couldn't be waited out — and acting — never by levels or years, only by choices, bonds, and what they cost.
The Blackwater Veil
Tea-dark rivers where eyes are useless — electricity and venom do the seeing. A quiet cold war between the electric guild and the venom guild, fought entirely in etiquette, never in strikes. Everything arrives as a ripple before it arrives as a shape.
