“They say Old Scarback — over two meters of scarred armor — caiman teeth met and outlasted; he simply keeps surfacing. — and the drowned forest hasn't contradicted them yet.”

Old Scarback
“He is the Flooded Cathedral's living monument — leaning on nothing, needing nothing, rising on schedule like the flood itself.”
A Tide denizen of The Flooded Cathedral
The living story
The story so far
Every scar on Old Scarback is a caiman that lost the argument. The arapaima's armor is mineralized; the caiman's teeth are not, quite, enough; and the old ones simply keep surfacing, decade after decade, because that is what the species does. Scarback is Pirarucu's grown form and her unspoken pride — she watches him the way the flood watches the forest. He speaks rarely, and when he does the Cathedral listens, because every word has been paid for in teeth.
The Old Scarback within
“Old Scarback is every caiman tooth that ever met him, and still surfacing.”
Monumental, scarred, and quiet as deep water — the Cathedral's living monument, two meters of scar-crosshatched armor that simply keeps surfacing, leaning on nothing and needing nothing.
monumental, scarred, quiet, unbreakable, wry, patient

- Can't stand
- boasting, hurry, the caiman years being romanticized
- How they befriend
- Few words, total presence — standing beside you is his whole vocabulary.
- When you're having a bad day
- He'll surface beside you and stand there, scarred and breathing, until you remember that surviving is a kind of answer.
How they’ll greet you: “You're here. Good.”
A keeper’s whisper: One scar wasn't made by a caiman. He doesn't name that one.

The Flooded Cathedral
The várzea: forest that drowns on schedule, the fish swimming through the canopy's reflection. The boto Encantado is the beloved trickster-prince; Pirarucu the aging queen whose armor remembers caiman teeth. They argue endlessly about whether the flood is a blessing or a siege, and both are right.
