The story so far
Barba's beard — the saki's great ruff — gets stroked thoughtfully for hours each day while he contemplates fruit: its ripeness, its meaning, its distribution. His conclusions are never shared. His stroking is constant.

The young ones bring him questions. He strokes his beard, considers, and responds with deeper questions. They leave enlightened and slightly hungry.

Kavi — who tells stories that are all true — says Barba's questions are the only stories that never end. Barba stroked his beard at this and said nothing. It was the perfect response.
