Toba's kind are few — the last-named great apes — and he carries it the way he carries everything: quietly, at dawn, in one sentence. The troop has learned to be awake for it.
Yesterday: 'The rain is deciding.' The troop has debated the meaning for a full day. Toba will not elaborate. Toba never elaborates.
The keepers believe Toba is saving one sentence — the important one — for the day he finally sees the Oldest. He has not confirmed this. He speaks at dawn.
“Yesterday: 'The rain is deciding.' The day before: 'The old branch holds.' Toba's dawn sentences are the troop's scripture and its puzzle. Kavi — who tells a thousand stories — collects them the way others collect stones, and will not interpret them. 'Interpretation,' he says, 'is for the living. The sentences are for longer than that.' The keepers believe Toba is saving one sentence — the important one. He speaks at dawn. The forest leans in.”

“Aria sings. Then Toba speaks — one sentence. Then Sona glows — or Sona glows while Toba speaks; the order is disputed, the sequence is not. The dawn has a choreography no one wrote and everyone performs. Vesper closes it at dusk; Hush hums it to sleep. The forest's day is fully staffed, fully sung — and at the center of it, the Oldest's branch, moving with no wind. The sequence, the keepers whisper, is older than the singers. The singers are just the current performers of a dawn that was already happening.”
