The story so far
Meron's chest-mark — the bright patch the geladas carry — has deepened with his years until the young ones call him the bleeding heart. He has earned the name: he has grieved every loss the troop has taken and celebrated every birth.
Happening now
He remembers the season before the four left — remembers it the way others remember weather. 'They were restless,' he says, 'the way the grass is restless before rain.' He will not say more. He has said enough.
