The living story
The story so far
Maple retrieves. That's the whole resume and it's enough: balls, sticks, the TV remote, your bad mood. Last summer she dove into the lake after a sinking canoe paddle and surfaced with the paddle and a fish, looking equally proud of both. The family framed the fish story and ate the fish. Everyone won.
Happening now
She has started retrieving things before they're lost — your keys while you're still holding them, the leash before you've decided to walk. It's either precognition or supreme optimism. The family has stopped questioning it and started checking her mouth before leaving the house.
What may come
Maple is one retrieved item away from achieving total household logistics. Give her another season and she'll be running the lost-and-found for the entire county, out of her mouth, with perfect inventory.
