The story so far
Scout was bred to hold lions at bay while the hunter caught up — to stand between a lion and a man and decide the lion could wait. He wears the ridge of backward fur like a mohawk and the calm of a dog who looked at a lion and found it manageable. It was not manageable. He was magnificent.
Happening now
These days the lions are the neighbor's terrier, and Scout holds it at bay with the same gravity. The terrier barks itself hoarse. Scout has never raised his voice in his life.
What may come
The family is fostering a rescue puppy — all elbows and panic. Scout has been assigned as its mentor. He has begun by teaching it to lie down like the world is not ending.
