The story so far
The Black and White Impermanence: the underworld's escort duo — Xie Bi'an in white, tall and sorrowful; Fan Wujiu in black, short and grinning — walking the living world with chains and placards to collect the newly dead. They never hurry and they never miss. Somewhere, right now, they are walking toward someone. It is never you. Until it is.
Happening now
They are walking tonight, side by side, toward a house with its lanterns still lit. The white one is already sorry. The black one is already grinning. The house does not know yet.
What may come
One night they will walk toward someone and find the house empty — the soul already gone, collected by no one, free — and the two Impermanences will look at each other, set down the chains, and keep walking, together, with nowhere to be. It will be the first night off in eternity. They have earned it.
