The Cowherd: a mortal ox-tender who married a goddess and got the whole sky reorganized as punishment. Separated from Zhinü by the Milky Way — a river the Jade Emperor combed out of the sky with a hairpin — he waits all year for one night. He has never complained. The ox he rode to heaven did all the complaining for him.
He is mending a fence tonight that does not need mending, watching the sky-river brighten. The magpies are gathering. He is counting the nights the way other men count coins.
One seventh month the ox will speak again — the old ox, the one who carried him up — and tell him the way across that doesn't need a bridge. The Cowherd has been waiting for that sentence for longer than dynasties last. The ox has been saving it.
“Zhinü weaves the clouds into brocade, and every bolt has its pattern — storm, dawn, river-light. Last seventh month she finished a bolt with no pattern at all: plain dark silk, uncut, unhemmed, folded and put away. Asked what it was for, she said it was for no one. The magpies, who see everything, refuse to discuss it.”
