Her signature behavior: three joyful knocks means hello, two slow knocks means come and see this, and one soft knock means she is thinking of you.

The living story

The story so far

Cinderbill hatched where the Wilderness thins into tall old trees, with a voice built for wailing and a beak built for knocking. She tried the wail once, as a chick, and startled herself so thoroughly that she laughed — and then knocked, just to hear a sound she had chosen. The wood has listened for her rhythms ever since.

Happening now

She is teaching the hollow trees near her roost to answer her. Most days it is only echo, but lately one old ash answers a breath late, in her exact pattern, and she has started leaving her best berries at its roots just in case someone is practicing.

What may come

One morning the answering knocks may come in a pattern she never taught — three joyful, two slow, one soft — and Cinderbill will have to decide whether she has found a student, a sibling of the wood, or an invitation to knock on a door she cannot yet see.

Whispers about Cinderbill

“Knock three times on hollow ash and listen. If the answer comes a breath late, it is not an echo being slow. It is someone being polite.”

The answering tree near Cinderbill's roost

“Her gold seams hum, very faintly, in the rhythm she is about to knock — as if the mending remembers the music first.”

Kintsugi veins brighten before a knock-call

“She leaves the first berries of the season and never watches who takes them. Some gifts only work unwitnessed.”
