The bell keeps count. Ask what number it is on.

Their signature ritual is the Midnight Crossing: they pause beneath a sleeper's window, tilt the galaxy bell until a single star comes loose, and hum the low hound-note their father carried on the long walk, and they do not leave until the breathing inside has slowed.

The living story
Dreambell was born where the long meadow trail meets the first star of evening — a hound's patience folded into a jellyfish's dreaming. For weeks they simply walked, learning which windows belonged to restless sleepers, the bell on their collar learning to ring soft enough not to wake them.
Tonight the trail is busy: three villages, eleven sleepless windows, one star come loose from the bell already. Dreambell moves window to window, humming the low note, tentacle-ribbons brightening as each sleeper drifts under.
The bell grows fuller every night, and the oldest keepers say a bell that fills completely births a new star — which means Dreambell may one day stop walking the trail and hang a new light in the sky for every sleeper they ever soothed.

“Droopy's trail journals mention a stretch of path where the stars lean down close enough to touch. Dreambell was born there, and the grass still glows faintly on moonless nights.”
Walk the lean of the stars.
