“When the den went dark, forty-three small voices stopped at once — not from fear, but because a blue light had learned their names.”
Her stare quiets, her lure reassures.

Her bioluminescent forehead lure glows soft moon-blue when a lost or scared youngster is near, and her signature behavior is to open her fang-lined smile just a little, light first, so the dark feels safe before anyone has to be brave in it.

The living story
Lanternmaw was born where a moonlit den met the deep trench, a wolf pup-sitter's heart beating inside a body armored for the crushing dark. From her first night she could do what Wick did — silence a howling room with one look — except her look came with a small blue light that made the silence feel safe.
She now keeps the in-between places: the dark corridors, the deep water, the rooms after lights-out. Young Sparks who fear the dark learn to find her lure first, then her steady amber eyes, then her voice, low and unhurried, telling them the pressure will pass.
One night a whole den and a whole shoal may go dark at once, and Lanternmaw will have to choose which lost ones her single light finds first — and learn how to teach others to carry a glow of their own.

“The deep is crushing, the teeth stay open, and somehow that is the safest smile in the trench.”
Fangtooth's teeth, Wick's gentleness.
“She never chases the lost. She lights up, stands still, and lets them find their own way to her.”
A guardian who waits is still guiding.
