The living story
She was born at the water's edge, where the Canopy's river runs thinnest and the silt settles like gold dust. Her mother's nose arrived first — the proboscis way — and the elders staged the same intervention they once staged for Lila, telling her daily that it was magnificent until she believed it. On the season of her naming, her father folded three tiny sun-stamped bands around her ankles, and she has worn the weight of both inheritances since: the crossing-marks of the troop, the funerary craft of Atlantis.
The rains came early this season and the main crossing runs wrong — exactly as Lila's old marks warned it might. Riverstela spends her days wading the shallows in her gold bands, re-laying the blue stone marks stone by stone, while Imhotep studies her pigment recipe and calls it the most honest engineering he has seen in a temple.
The troop is beginning to ask her to mark more than crossings — birth paths, burial walks, the way home from anywhere. If she says yes, Riverstela's blue lines may become the Canopy's first true roads, and the silt-keeper may become something the multiverse has never had: a road-builder who answers to both the river and the dead.
