“Trenchito polishes every plate at dawn except one — the deep scratch over its heart. That one it shows to visitors.”
The scratch is where a king crab the size of a doghouse taught it about helmets.

Its signature behavior is the Pressure Roll: it tucks into a plated ball and bowls gleefully through tidepools, rocks, and startled crabs, then springs upright with a defiant wave and a grin full of tiny fangs.

The living story
When a desert warrior's fire met an abyssal isopod's patience, the sea gave back a puppy. Trenchito grew up prowling tidepools at sunrise, polishing its plates, and practicing its defiant wave on an audience of crabs.
Trenchito has appointed itself guardian of the dawn tidepools, barking (very loudly) at anything that drifts too close — waves, shadows, and its own reflection.
One day the trench will call it deeper, and Trenchito will roll down the dark slope laughing — the first of its line to map where the sunlight ends.

“Trenchito polishes every plate at dawn except one — the deep scratch over its heart. That one it shows to visitors.”
The scratch is where a king crab the size of a doghouse taught it about helmets.
“On moonless nights it presses an ear flat to the sand and holds perfectly still, as if the whole ocean were whispering.”
It is listening for the tide, the way its mother listened in the dark.
“When the trench far below answers its glow with a double pulse, Trenchito stops barking — and glows back.”
The second glow is its own answer: someone worth glowing back at.
