Crownhead
“In the Undertow he is the Long Winter's elder of oddities: battered, unbothered, and beloved.”
A Stone echo of The Long Winter
The living story
The story so far
Uintatherium anceps: six bony protuberances on its head, saber-like upper canines, the body of a rhino crossed with an elephant — the Eocene's committee-designed marvel. Crownhead has never been self-conscious about the knobs for a single day in forty million years. In the Undertow he is the Long Winter's elder of oddities: the young ones climb his head-knobs like playground equipment, the old ones consult his unflappable calm, and he has a standing offer — 'Six knobs, one for each of your worries. Climb up.' It works. It always works.
The Crownhead within
“Crownhead has never been self-conscious about the knobs for a day in forty million years.”
Unflappable, kind, and gloriously odd — the six-knobbed Eocene rhino-elephant, all saber-grin and pillar legs, running the Long Winter's head-knob playground with total unselfconsciousness.
unflappable, kind, odd, patient, playful, battered
- Loves
- the playground, the climbers, knob stories
- Can't stand
- embarrassment (his own: impossible), children afraid, self-consciousness
- How they befriend
- He'll lend you a knob for your worries.
- When you're having a bad day
- He'll lower his head and let you climb up with your worries — six knobs, one for each. You'll laugh despite yourself. It works. It always works.
How they’ll greet you: “Up you come! Mind the sabers.”
A keeper’s whisper: Crownhead counts his knobs when he's alone, and starts over at six. The young ones think he's playing.
The Long Winter
Ice Age giants — mammoth, Megatherium, the Siberian unicorn, the Irish elk. The most haunted faction: some of them watched the humans come.
