The story so far
In 1834, in Punta Alta, Argentina, Charles Darwin — twenty-five, seasick, brilliant — picked up the bones of a giant ground sloth and named the genus for what it was. Mylodon darwinii: Darwin's sloth. Darwin the resident has the name and the temperament: stocky, studded with bony ossicles, methodical, quietly proud. In the Undertow he is the Long Winter's scholar — he keeps the natural-history records, corresponds with the First Deep's archivists, and has a standing, friendly, utterly unresolved debate with Fiveyes about whose archive is older.
