The story so far
One skull. Ten feet of it, found in Peru, with teeth fourteen inches long — Livyatan melvillei, named for Herman Melville, a killer sperm whale that hunted other whales. The world knows almost nothing else. In the Undertow, Melville is a Silence: known from almost nothing, guarded like a heart, visited not exhibited per the old laws. The Half-Remembered keep his hall hushed and candlelit. He speaks rarely. When he does, it's about the Miocene — the warm seas, the whales, the certainty of being the largest thing with teeth. Then the candles burn low, and the visit ends, and the preciousness of it sits in your chest for days.
