When the first Cambrian seas filled with experiment, Fiveyes was the experiment that worked: five eyes where two would do, a trunk with a claw on the end, paddles for a body. The scientists who found them in the Burgess Shale argued for a century about what they were looking at. In the Undertow, Fiveyes keeps the oldest records — the procession routes, the names of the fallen, the exact order of the chairs — because someone with five eyes misses nothing, and someone who misses nothing becomes the memory everyone else trusts.
