The living story
The story so far
Mammuthus primigenius: the icon. And the last of them — a dwarf herd on Wrangel Island, north of Siberia — lived until about 1700 BCE, when the pyramids were already ancient. Steppeking remembers the steppe, the cold, the calves, and the humans with their spears and their cave paintings. In the Undertow he leads the Long Winter by gravity of memory: the mammoths go first, the others follow, because someone has to. He weeps sometimes — the faction most likely to — and makes no apology for it. The cold, he says, teaches you that feeling is also a kind of warmth.
