Stiltwalker
“In the Undertow they walk the abyssal floor on clawed stilt-legs, cheerfully unbothered, the First Deep's beloved walking correction.”
A Deep echo of The First Deep
The living story
The story so far
For decades the textbooks drew Stiltwalker wrong — spines down, legs up, a creature walking on its own roof. Then someone flipped the fossil and the whole animal made sense. Stiltwalker has never held it against anyone. In the Undertow they lead the slow processions of the First Deep, stilt-legs picking careful paths through the dark, and they keep a private joke: that being misunderstood for a hundred years is the best education in patience the world ever offered. The young ones adore them; the old ones pretend not to.
The Stiltwalker within
“Stiltwalker was drawn upside-down for a century and forgave everyone.”
Warm, patient, and gloriously self-deprecating — the First Deep's beloved walking correction, all seven pairs of stilt-legs and a story for every spine.

- the flip-story, slow processions, newcomers' first laughs
- Can't stand
- cruelty disguised as humor, being pitied, rushed goodbyes
- How they befriend
- They'll laugh at themselves so you don't have to laugh at yourself.
- When you're having a bad day
- They'll tell you about the hundred years they spent upside-down until your own bad day feels survivable.
How they’ll greet you: “Mind the spines — hug incoming anyway.”
A keeper’s whisper: One particular textbook drawing is kept somewhere private — the wrong one, loved anyway.
The First Deep
Cambrian weird wonders — Opabinia, Hallucigenia, Wiwaxia and the eldest of all. They sank deepest, speak in old patterns, and consider themselves the originals of everything, which, strictly speaking, they are.
