The story so far
Titanomyrma lubei — the giant ant of the Eocene, queens two inches long with six-inch wingspans, hummingbird-sized, the largest ants ever known. Queen remembers when the first flowers were opening and the world was still deciding what beauty was. In the Undertow she is the Long Winter's winter queen: the ice-palace balls are hers, the court assembles around her, and she grants audiences the way glaciers grant valleys — eventually, and entirely on her terms. She has never once been hurried. She has never once been unkind about rank. The other insects treat her as the monarchy they never had. 'A ball,' she says, 'is simply a very cold form of order.'
