The story so far
She was a surf lifeguard, and she has never lost an argument with the ocean — though she has never won one quickly either. Breakwater stands between the wave and whatever it wants: three storm surges turned back, one runaway jet ski, and then she surfs the redirected waves home after, because why waste a good wave.
Happening now
The spring tides are running high against the Drowned Quarter seawall, and Breakwater has taken up her post at the worst breach — standing in the spray for hours, turning each set aside with her whole body. The kids bring her sandwiches. She pretends not to be moved. She is moved.
What may come
Monsoon has asked her to stand inside a real tempest — to be the breakwater for a storm-sea, not just a wave. Breakwater said she'd think about it while surfing. The ocean, presumably, is waiting.
