The living story

The story so far

She was a sleep-clinic nurse, and she walks dreams for a living. Lucid enters the nightmares of Vesper's children and walks them out — holding small hands through the dark parts. She keeps a dream-journal of every rescue. The monsters in it are all retired.

Happening now

The deep-channel hum is getting into the children's dreams — a low note under the nightmares — and Lucid is walking extra shifts, holding small hands through darker water than usual. Wisp's fireflies are learning to be gentle enough to follow her in. The dreams are already brighter.

What may come

She's been asking the Mindfire about the coordinates in their dreams — the ones Apogee and Stormcrown keep watching for. Lucid thinks the children are dreaming them too, in pictures instead of numbers. She's started drawing what they describe. The pictures all show the same empty sky.

Whispers about Lucid

“Tuesday, 4 a.m.: one dream, citywide — a single clear note, held too long, then silence underneath it. Lucid walked a thousand children out of it before dawn and came back white-faced, saying the dark parts of the dream weren't dream at all. Noosphere has refused to link anyone since; the last thing the city heard through her was the sound of someone else, listening back. Amari's sanctuaries are full every night now. The quiet is no longer free.”

The whole city dreamed the same dream.

“Lucid keeps a journal of every child she's walked out of nightmares — names, dates, the monsters retired. This week three entries un-wrote themselves, the ink lifting off the page like breath off a window, and the children in question don't remember the dreams either. Dreamweaver wove a recovery illusion to call the memories back and got, instead, an empty room with one chair, facing the corner. He's performed for thirty years. He's never been booed by an empty room before.”

Lucid's dream-journal has started erasing itself.

The Mindfire

Vesper's psions — telepaths, telekinetics, and dreamwalkers who answer calls the body can't reach. They find the lost by thinking of them, lift the fallen without touching, and keep the city's nightmares quiet. The Mindfire's rule: never take what a mind doesn't offer.
