The story so far
Caught by a predator, the Brittle Star simply lets go — an arm detaches, the predator gets a snack, and the star grows another. It carpets the abyssal floor in densities that look like lace from above, each one ready to sacrifice a limb and keep going.
Happening now
Its beds spread around the Mussel grounds and the vent fields, arms waving in the current like wheat. The Eelpout steps carefully; the Anemone watches; the Brittle Stars regenerate without pause.
What may come
Regeneration has limits, but the Brittle Star hasn't found them. Its beds are spreading — more arms, more lace, more comebacks. The floor is becoming a single slow organism, one sacrificed arm at a time.
