The living story
The story so far
When a whale dies, its body falls for weeks and feeds the Abyss for decades — and the Osedax sisterhood arrives first. The females bloom from the bones in red plumes, sending living roots into the marrow to digest what no one else can. The males are microscopic dwarfs who never grow up, living their whole lives inside the female. The sisterhood treats every Fallen Feast as sacred ground.
Happening now
A whalefall is currently feeding the Abyss, and the sisterhood is at work — plumes waving, roots spreading through the great bones. The Giant Isopod is en route; the Rattails are circling; the feast will last fifty years.
What may come
Every Fallen Feast ends, and the sisterhood moves on — or waits, dormant, for the next fall. The old mothers remember falls from before the ships; the young ones are learning patience from the bones.
