The living story
The story so far
It has no eyes, and it doesn't need them: the Vent Shrimp carries a light-sensing patch on its back, tuned to the faint glow of the vents themselves. It swarms the chimneys in clouds of thousands, reading heat and glow the way you read a map, grazing the bacterial mats.
Happening now
The swarms shimmer around the plume-fields and the crab's farms, a living weather of shrimp. The Compact's grazers' quarter runs on their harvest; the shrimp run on the vent's glow, seen with their backs.
What may come
The vents' glow is fading at the old field — chimneys cooling, one by one. The shrimp's back-eyes are already turning toward the new seep, where the glow is young. The swarm will follow the light it feels.
