Whalefish

“The tapetail larva, the bignose male, and the whalefish female are one animal — the most extreme metamorphosis in vertebrates.”

The living story

The story so far

Science named it three times: the tapetail larva was one family, the bignose male another, the whalefish female a third. Then someone checked, and all three were the same animal — the most extreme transformation any vertebrate undergoes. The Whalefish contains multitudes, literally.

Happening now

The females cruise the Midnight in their whale-like maturity, while their own larval forms drift above them, unrecognized by everyone except — finally — science. The Whalefish has stopped introducing its younger selves.

What may come

Three families, one body. The Whalefish's daughters are already changing the script — some larvae are lingering longer, some males transforming stranger. The most extreme metamorphosis in vertebrates is still editing itself.

Whispers about Whalefish

“The Ascendant is almost finished changing — the tapetail is shortening, the female's body filling in — and the Whalefish has started visiting daily, like a relative at a bedside. Transformations end. This one is ending soon. Nobody knows what it becomes after.”

The change is almost complete. What comes after?

The Midnight

No sunlight has ever reached here. Anglerfish hold solitary lure-territories under the Treaty of the Lure: a light is sovereign ground, and stealing another’s glow is war.
