Charybdis

“She drinks the ocean and spits out ships.”

A Whirlpool legend of Monsters & Beasts

The living story

The story so far

Charybdis stole Heracles's cattle — or Zeus's, the songs vary — and was hurled into the sea as a whirlpool. Odysseus lost his last ship to her; he survived by clinging to a fig tree until she spat it back.

Happening now

She still turns three times a day, opposite Scylla. The fig tree is gone; the whirlpool remains.

What may come

The sea level is hers to command in her corner of the strait. Sailors say she is drinking faster lately, as if making up for lost time.
