The story so far
Her burrow has a lid so perfectly fitted that when she holds it shut with her fangs, the forest floor shows no seam at all. Corklid learned early that the best lock is the one nobody knows is there.
Happening now
Something just tugged at her lid — a curious beetle, probably, or a nosy wasp. She is holding it shut with all eight legs braced, the way she has a thousand times before. The tugger will give up. They always give up.
What may come
She will hold that door for years, through drought and deluge, and raise her babies behind it. When they dig their own burrows, they will fit their lids with the same obsessive, loving precision.
