The living story
The story so far
Ceres was found on New Year's Day 1801 and crowned the first asteroid, then promoted to dwarf planet in 2006. She rules the belt's rubble with salt-white bright spots and hidden ice, the only dwarf planet with a court between Mars and Jupiter.
Happening now
Dawn's maps showed her bright spots are salt left by ancient brines, and she wears them like medals now. She has begun venting water vapor when the Sun warms her, and the Courts of Stone treat her as their elder stateswoman.
What may come
She may hold a buried ocean under her crust, and she guards that secret jealously. If it ever breaks the surface, she will become a water-world overnight — and Vesta has offered to guard her flank if it happens.
