The living story
The story so far
It starts life as a leaf — a transparent leptocephalus larva, flat and drifting — and grows into one of the great mouths of the deep: a pelican's beak on an eel's body, with a stomach to match. The Gulper Eel is the Midnight's proof that you can become unrecognizable and still be yourself.
Happening now
It hangs in the dark with its great mouth half-open, a living net. The migration's stragglers drift in; the Gulper barely moves. Becoming a mouth was the best decision it ever made.
What may come
Every gulper was once a leaf. The old ones remember the leaf days — or say they do — and the young ones don't believe them. One day a larva will ask, and an elder will answer, and the story will start over.
