Barkface

“It is.”

A Mirewater reptile of The Ancient Shells

The living story

The story so far

She was born looking like a handful of wet leaves, and instead of fighting it, she leaned in — harder than any turtle has ever leaned into anything. Her camouflage is now so complete that her own hatchlings have lost her. Twice.

Happening now

She works as the swamp’s quality inspector: if something can fool Barkface, it can fool anyone. Smugglers, herons, lost tourists — she has seen through them all. Her reports are one word: "No." Or, rarely: "Fine."

What may come

She is writing a guide to disappearing: "Be the Leaf." Chapter one is just a blank page. Readers call it "devastatingly effective." She has not confirmed whether this was intentional. It was.

Why someone keeps Barkface

  • because "Be the Leaf" is a whole philosophy in three words
  • because her one-word reviews are the swamp’s most trusted criticism
  • because committing to looking like debris, fully, is inspiring

The Ancient Shells

The shelled ones: sea turtles, tortoises, terrapins, snappers — the slowest hearts and the longest memories. Fifteen shells, none of them in any hurry at all.

Personality
A pile of dead leaves that judges you. Barkface’s neck frills, bark-textured shell, and permanent expression of deep suspicion make her the swamp’s most committed introvert. She has perfected the art of looking like debris. She considers this a compliment.

Joe was here.

“a Joe parable: the first skin is still dreaming. You’re wearing its dream. The old ones said we all wear something handed down.”
