“He considered it a five-star review.”
A Mirewater reptile of The River Tyrants

The living story
The story so far
He discovered log-acting as a hatchling, when his siblings raced and splashed and he simply... floated. A dragonfly landed on his snout. Then a frog. Then, gloriously, a heron. He had found his art.
Happening now
He studies under Barkface the matamata — "the professor of debris" — and his technique has improved 200%. Current repertoire: the sunken log, the bobbing branch, the "definitely not a crocodile" (his signature). Herons are fooled daily.
What may come
He is preparing his masterwork: floating an entire tide cycle without breaking character, past the heron rookery, the fishing eagles, and Brine herself. If Brine doesn’t notice him, he graduates. Brine has noticed everything for forty years. The stakes are enormous.

Why someone keeps Driftwood
- because a heron nested on him and he took it as a review
- because "definitely not a crocodile" is a signature piece
- because the Brine test is coming and the whole estuary is watching
The River Tyrants
The river tyrants: crocodiles, alligators, caimans, gharials — the ambush perfected over eighty million years. Fifteen smiles, every one of them full of teeth.

- A young croc committed to the bit: he looks like a log, acts like a log, and is slowly becoming the most convincing log in the estuary. His impression is so good that a heron once nested on him.
